Background:
The Atlantic stingray (family, Dasyatidae) is a small coastal stingray distributed primarily along the southeastern United States and coastal areas in the Gulf of Mexico. This species is interesting because, unlike most elasmobranch fishes, it is known to inhabit waters of low salinity and has been recorded in several freshwater lakes of Florida. Currently, there is no fishery for the Atlantic stingray.
